Medical Education in India

I’m always impressed by the amount of medical education provided by our colleagues at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Science (NIMS), one our of primary partners during our Hyderabad trip.  The medicine residents (4 per year, a 3 year program like our own) had clinicopathological conference, radiology conference, case presentations, and lectures scattered throughout the week, ultimately providing a density of educational opportunities very analogous to what we have in Boston – despite a reduced amount of support for medical education (as a reminder, Medicare heavily subsidizes graduate medical education (GME) in the United States).
NIMS is one of the premier teaching institutions in this state, and the quality of the experience here cannot be assumed to be paralleled across all GME within the state or within India itself. But it is a great reminder that our colleagues in many settings strive to provide excellent education, often with significantly less financial support than we have available in the US.
