April Global Health Readings #2

This is an interesting discussion of the background behind the Global Burden of Disease reports (information I did not know!) and also does a nice job summarizing several of the controversies around them, including DALYs as well as the danger of appearing overly precise when the foundations of the information are often relatively weak.
A pair of book reviews, touching upon the ongoing (? eternal) debate on how best to perform development, and who is best positioned to perform it.  Nice summary of some new information towards both sides.
One welcome outcome of the Ebola outbreak is the hastening towards a shared epidemiological infrastructure for the African continent.  One of several important steps needed to prevent outbreaks from reaching epidemic status in the future.
A lovely piece musing on the nature of pain and suffering viewed through the lenses of American and Thai medicine.
