There’s an obvious and important link to make between the two of these – the second piece discusses in welcome detail the initial failures in getting ORS uptake secondary to cultural issues, and the numerous iterations needed before they got it right. The spread of Ebola has been heavily aided by cultural issues (both traditional burial approaches as well as a distrust of the official structures), per most news reports to date, and it seems timely to reflect on the need to win a populace’s support to effectively battle any widespread disease, be it Ebola or diarrhea.
